The team at Miele X values having people from a wide variety of different backgrounds and experiences, bringing their unique perspective, such as Dutchman Bob Offerman, E-Commerce Project Manager. He’s had a long and varied career in marketing and e-commerce, working in a variety of countries, including Spain, Belgium, the UK and Norway. For 22 years before he joined Miele X, he set up a number of companies and also worked as an e-commerce consultant. He’s lived near Amsterdam most of his life and loves the city. We talked to him about his career and why he chose to join Miele X.
Tell us about your career
It’s a long story! I’m originally from the Netherlands and after national service I went into marketing as my first career. I started working for an American company dealing with holiday homes in mainland Spain and the Canaries. After that I came back to the Netherlands and set up the Amsterdam office for a major UK city break operator.
Then I moved to Norway and started working in the business-to-business fundraising sector there. Eventually, I started my own marketing company in that sector in Norway.
In 1997 I came back to the Netherlands and joined McAfee, the antivirus software company, as a Sales Manager, dealing with countries across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. I then decided to set-up a business partnership to sell McAfee antivirus software externally into the BeNeLux markets where I was one of the first business partners to offer online updates and ordering options.
During my career I have set-up a number of companies, I have even opened two furniture stores and a restaurant near Amsterdam!
What attracted you to Miele X?
Through conversation with the team at Miele X I discovered there was a great opportunity to shape and drive the digital future of global brand Miele – which sounded exciting and interesting.
At the age of 58, it was a big step for me to work for a business, after being self-employed for such a long time, and I’m happy to say I’m enjoying it once again. One of the things that has impressed me is that Miele X is a cauldron of information and knowledge. It’s a melting pot of 29 nationalities and everyone’s a specialist in their respective field. I may have broad experience and had a long career, but there are lots of people here who have far more in-depth knowledge. I can learn from them, and in turn I hope they can learn something from me.
What has surprised you the most?
I think the biggest surprise was how well Miele X has been able to keep growing and developing in the middle of a global pandemic. It’s been an unusual situation starting at a company where I haven’t met any of my colleagues face-to-face.
Miele X does a lot of things to support you when you’re working from home. You can’t go a month without receiving a card or a gift, such as flowers or chocolates from them. They really target your well-being, which is great when you can’t have social interaction with your colleagues.
What do you enjoy most about working at Miele X?
Working with people who I can learn from. In my specific job I’m proud to be part of something that will shape the future of digital commerce for many different countries – migrating them to a constantly improving e-commerce platform.
We may be a newly formed organisation, but very few organisations have the specialistic capabilities and skills Miele X has, so we might just be setting an example for many different companies around the world too.
What’s next? You decide
Now is an exciting time to join the diverse team at Miele X as we create a new digital heritage for one of the world’s best-loved brands.
